Fellowship Programs for Graduate Study

The following fellowship programs for graduate study are examples of programs that may be appropriate for graduate study in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University.

Federally-funded fellowship programs:

• Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships The foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
  Application deadline: mid November.
• National Phyisical Science Consortium Graduate fellowships in the physical sciences.
  Application deadline: early November.
• Graduate Research Fellowship Program from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
  Application due : November.
• Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowships from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  Application due : November.
• Office of Science Graduate Fellowship from the Department of Energy.
  Application due : November.
• Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate Fellowship Program from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
  Application due : June.
• Earth and Space Science Fellowships from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  Application due : February.
• National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships from the Department of Defense (DoD).
  Application due : January.
• Computational Science Graduate Fellowships from the Department of Energy (DOE).
  Application due : January.

Association-funded fellowship programs:

• American Association of University Women American Fellowships Support for women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions.
  Application deadline: mid November.
• American Association of University Women International Fellowship Awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported. Several of fellowships are available for study outside of the U.S.
  Application deadline: early December.
• United Soybean Board Fellowships promote graduate education in plant sciences with an emphasis on soybeans. The fellowship provides a $25,000 annual stipend for up to four years of graduate school.
  Applications are due March 27; Reference letters are due April 3.

Iowa State University fellowship programs:

• Graduate fellowships from the Plant Sciences Institute.
• George Washington Carver Doctoral Fellowships.
• Graduate Minority Assistantship Program (GMAP).
