Field pennycress seedlings emerge in the autumn, a winter annual.  Seedlings (left) and larger plant with seedling surrounding it (right):

In the spring the plant continues to grow vegetatively, and quickly "bolts", forms an extended stem and flowers:

The seeds mature on the parent plant, the flowers are lost, and the distinctive "penny" shaped capsules become apparent
